Signs That You May Have a Bed Bug Infestation
Despite bed bugs being in millions of homes across the US, they can actually be difficult to spot. Most people are unsure what a bed bug looks like and are unsure about the signs of a bed bug infestation. Today, Bed Bug Heaters would like to share some evidence that you can look for to determine whether your home is infested with bed bugs. Look for these four signs to learn if you need to call Bed Bug Heaters today.
1 - Look For Bed Bug Shells or Molted Skins Bed bugs grow with each meal they take from your blood. In order to compensate for their increased size, they need to shed their exoskeletons in order to have room for growth. This molting process will leave behind shells or skins on your mattress or furniture. There are five stages of growth that bed bugs go through where they will shed their skin or shells. While the shells are small, an infestation could include hundreds, if not thousands, of bed bugs, and the shells will be evident with close inspection. 2 - Check for Fecal Spots After bed bugs feed on your blood, they leave behind liquid waste wherever they go. People tend to think that stains will be red since they feed on our blood. However, that is not the case. Fecal spots will be dark brown or even black after the blood has been digested. While the spots will be small, a large enough infestation will leave these marks on the furniture where they live. 3 - The Bed Bugs Themselves Many people believe that bed bugs are invisible to the naked eye. However, that is not the case, especially after they have matured. Adult bed bugs are about five millimeters in size, around the size of an apple seed. They have a reddish-brown color, have no wings, and a flat body. If you know where to look for them, you can definitely see them without any equipment. Common locations include headboards, wall junction, loose wallpaper crevices, and mattress or furniture seams. 4 - Symptoms on Your Body The most unlikely sign of bed bugs in your home is the bed bugs’ bite. Bed bug bites look very similar to other insect bites like fleas, mosquitoes, or even hives. In fact, most people do not have a reaction at all to their bites. However, if you notice raised, red welts all in a straight line or clumped in a single area you may have bed bugs. If you wake up with these symptoms you should immediately begin searching for the above signs of infestation. Do You Think You Have Bed Bugs?
